What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a ‘normal’ human feeling of fear or panic. Most people will experience anxiety at some point and it is a ‘normal’ reaction to some situations. An example of this might be during exam times, job interviews or a presentation in front of an audience. Once the situation is over the feelings of anxiety will go.

When does anxiety become a problem?

When anxiety becomes a problem, our worries can be out of proportion with relatively harmless situations. It can feel more intense or overwhelming, and interfere with our everyday lives and relationships.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

  • Feeling nervous, on edge, or panicky all the time
  • Feeling overwhelmed or full of dread
  • Feeling out of control
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Low appetite
  • Finding it difficult to concentrate
  • Feeling tired and grumpy
  • Heart beating really fast or thinking you’re having a heart attack
  • Having a dry mouth
  • Stomach cramps and/or diarrhoea/needing to urinate more than usual
  • Sweating more than usual
