Year 7 Catch-up Premium

Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch-up Premium

What is the catch-up premium?
The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium gives state-funded schools, including special schools and alternative provision settings, additional funding to support year 7 pupils who did not achieve the expected standard in reading or maths at the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2).

How will the money be spent?

To support reading and develop literacy, we will assess the students’ current levels using the Access Reading Test and used this to benchmark our interventions and establish a starting point for individual students. Depending on their specific need, every student who has failed to reach the expected standard at the end of KS2 will then be matched to the most appropriate intervention, from a menu which will include:

  • 1-2-1 work on phonics
  • 1-2-1 work on spellings
  • Small group work on reading comprehension
  • 1-2-1, paired and small group “Read to succeed” sessions

Students will be re-tested at the end of the year to assess the impact of the work. It is hoped that the majority of students will make significant progress in terms of both word recognition and reading comprehension as a result of the interventions they received. Those students who fail to make significant progress as a result of these programmes will continue to receive small group and 1-2-1 support into Year 8.

To support numeracy, we will assess the pupils using the Progress In Maths tests and use this to benchmark our interventions and to establish a competency profile for each student. Depending on their specific need, every student who had failed to reach the expected standard at the end of KS2 was then matched to the most appropriate intervention, either:

  • 1-2-1 support on all areas of Mathematics
  • Small group work focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages.

The groups who receive the 1-2-1 sessions will be monitored and re-assessed and those students will continue to receive numeracy interventions into Year 8.
