Literacy Offer at The Deanery

Intent: To be literate is to be able to learn, therefore Literacy sits as the heart of our curriculum. Our vision is for every student to develop the literacy skills, confidence, and curiosity needed to engage deeply with learning and to flourish in a complex, changing world.

Our Aspirations

Hope

  • We foster a culture where literacy opens doors to new possibilities.
  • Through exposure to diverse texts and powerful stories, students are inspired to imagine their futures, broaden their horizons, and believe in their capacity to achieve.

Wisdom

  • We support students in becoming critical thinkers who can analyse, question and interpret information thoughtfully.
  • Across all subjects, learners develop the vocabulary, clarity, and depth of understanding needed to express informed and wise perspectives.

Service

  • We encourage students to use their literacy skills to contribute positively to others.
Whether through collaborative discussion, thoughtful communication, or sharing ideas that uplift the school community, literacy becomes a tool for making a meaningful difference.

Resilience

  • We help students develop resilience by enabling them to tackle challenging texts, craft complex ideas in writing, and persevere through difficulty.
  • Students learn that literacy is a journey—one requiring practice, effort, and the confidence to keep going even when skills take time to develop.

Our Whole‑School Commitment: We believe every teacher is a teacher of literacy. As a school community, we commit to:

  • Embedding high‑quality reading, writing, and speaking opportunities in every subject.
  • Developing rich vocabulary instruction to equip students with the language they need to thrive.
  • Providing targeted support so every learner, regardless of starting point, can experience success.
  • Celebrating reading and communication in ways that reflect our values and strengthen our school culture.

Our Literacy Culture: We strive to build a community of readers and communicators who:

  • Read widely, think deeply, and speak with purpose
  • Value the power of stories and knowledge
  • Demonstrate empathy, integrity and a sense of service
  • Show resilience in overcoming challenges
  • Approach learning with hope and a belief in their potential
