Design Technology “Design is thinking made visual.” Saul Bass
In the Creative Arts faculty, we believe that our subjects are extremely valuable as they help us to understand and give meaning to the world in which we live. Our aim is to provide an opportunity for all students to explore their creativity and become the best artists and designers.
The Design and Technology department at The Deanery allows students to combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking enabling them to design and make products. We aim to equip all students with the skills to think creatively, be socially, morally and environmentally aware and solve problems as individuals, in pairs and as team members.
The curriculum we provide is rich in skills and knowledge. We scaffold our curriculum in a way that allows students to continually revisit skills and build upon them each year, tackling increasingly challenging concepts as they move up through key stage three, and in preparation for their elected option choices with us at key stage four. Our curriculum provides students with an enriched experience as they get to work with a broad range of materials and contexts. We aim to provide an environment in which students feel happy taking risks, reflecting upon their creative journey and responding positively to both teacher and peer feedback.
At key stage 3 students rotate around the different subject strands of Graphics, Textiles, Product Design and Food. Each rotation is approximately two terms in length.
Students in year 7 spend one lesson a fortnight following one of three subject strands: Graphics, Textiles and Product Design.
Students in year 8 spend two lessons a fortnight following one of three subject strands: Food, Graphics and Textiles.
Students in year 9 spend two lessons a fortnight following one of three subject strands: Graphics, Textiles and Product Design.
Design and Technology also aims to develop the student’s confidence and to be better prepared in coping with changing situations in an ever increasing technological world.
The Deanery Design and Technology department aims:
- To create curiosity, interest and enjoyment in Design Technology
- To ensure that learners develop technical and practical competencies
- To be problem solvers who are not afraid of making mistakes
- To enable students to pursue the subject to the highest possible level
